- 10% was not the minimum amount for Israel. They gave less than 10% at times. (Hebrews 7:4; Numbers 31:28-30)
- The New Testament does not command, address, or mention tithing to the Gentiles who are unfamiliar with Jewish practices.
- Jesus’ own ministry operated from freewill offerings. He also commanded the disciples to receive freely. (Luke 8:1-3, Matthew 10:8-10)
- The children of God under his family are not taxed. They are free to give (Matthew 17:25; Galatians 4:5)
- Tithing was not a requirement prior to the Mosaic law considering Jacob freely offered God 10%. (Genesis 28:20)
- None of the Israelites tithed while outside of the promised land. (Deuteronomy 12:5)
- Abraham’s tithe was under the Old Covenant, which was established before Moses and was also fulfilled (Genesis 3; Hebrews 8:13)
- Giving would be the only spiritual gift with a minimum requirement and not led by the Spirit.
- There are no commands to modify tithing with how we practice it today, so people have to make up correlations to get it to fit into the church.
- Israelites who did not grow food or raise animals did not tithe. (Leviticus 27:30)
- Giving is not by compulsion. (2 Corinthians 9:6-9)
- The Levitical priests were required to serve 25 years, and just like tithing, the New Testament doesn’t recall this requirement either
- Unless giving 10% is the spiritual nature of God’s holiness, then it falls under the same classification of other interim tokens in the Old Covenant that Christ fulfilled

Can someone explain how is it that Bible Scholars who know better don’t speak out against the error of teaching that tithing is a required New Covenant Law for the Gentiles? They are an accessory to this false doctrine simply by saying and doing nothing! Hurting people do not need to feel like God will only love and bless them if they pay Him and it is a sin to continue to distort God’s character in this way! God always from the beginning of Genesis have a plan of Salvation and another way to bless us other than our own efforts.
Dear Precious Souls Jesus said:
Come unto me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest (for free that is).
Anonymous too says
DM you are wrong! It was not free to come unto Jesus. There was a heavy price paid for all to be able to do come to Jesus, in-fact it was paid by a blood sacrifice- His own blood sacrifice. He is the Gift and Giver! Be specific and accurate like you said. Tell the whole truth!
DM says
DM Dearest,
Thanks for your rebuke but is there anything that’s so obvious until it is just plain common sense????
However, unlike the false Gentile tithe teachers I stand corrected and will take caution to try and amend my words to spell out the specifics. I will restate the obvious. The road that was paved to come unto Jesus empty handed for free was not at all free free but purchased for you willingly with the Blood of Jesus who died for you and will bless you for free and no charge. I’m big enough to admit it when someone is right!
I guess I expected too much blatant common sense from anyone who can read out there!

This is for the Happy Catholic who felt the need earlier to defend the mother (only on earth)of Jesus. In John 2:4 at a Wedding where Jesus was the Guest along with his mother and disciples he told the servants to pour the water into the six water pots because they ran out of wine and he turned water into wine. His first miracle. Guess what he also did not ask for any money to do this miracle. The recipient of this free gift did not even know about it. Back to the subject. In the words of Mary your Lady and Queen of Heaven herself “Whatever He (Jesus)tells you to do, do it! Please take note Mary fanatics your queen did not say whatever I tell you to do, do it! Jesus said you shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve! In return he will give you a free miracle when you are in a need and ask him, just like he did in the New Testament without paying that ten percent of your gross. So don’t be jealous when you see people more well off than you who are not even paying their tithes but are blessed anyway. I could give out a whole list of them if there was time.
Question for the Super Rich says
Oprah, Bill Gates, Donald Trump and 99 percent of the godless Hollywood millionaire Writers, Producers and all of those Actors who are leading us down the road of immoral destruction.
I have a question for you, did you pay God his ten percent payment for your all that money you have?
I think it may be safe to answer that as Hell No! The modern day tithe doctrine to pay up to be rich is very illogical and insane in your membrane!
Barb says
Has anyone checked out MTV Cribs and all those famous Rappers who got rich bragging in their Rap lyrics about all the sex, drugs and money they have. They are able to buy and show off a gazillion expensive cars, fancy mansions and mega big screen TV’s. Not to worry they might all (black as well as the white ones) be broke, dead from drug overdoses or in prison in a few years anyway.
Anonymous too says
Barb, that was really petty and mean-spirited. Are you praying for them. If you watch the MTV OR BET Awards most all of those Entertainers/Rappers thank God when they win their awards so it is not a big stretch to imagine that they just might pay tithes or give their Mothers (many have religious single moms) money to do so. Some even pray and hold hands together and thanking God and ask for success and blessings in a circle before they go on stage in their Bio-documentaries. I even show Madonna do this. Not sure what God she was thanking though but I did see it on one of her documentaries. Okay, you got me, I watched her Truth or Dare Tour out of curiosity plus it was before I got saved! She is very generous in Charities as is Brad Pitt and Angela Jolie but I have never heard them say they are Christians or pay ten percent!
There is a universal principal that you reap what you sow or give and it shall be given. I just don’t understand why Pastors and tithe promoters can’t use the right bible verses when their are so many accurate ones to support giving. Why must they insult our intelligence by still trying to enforce an Old Covenant Jewish commandment to us New Covenant Gentiles. This is a fair question that has been asked by us who know better but they fail to answer! To lie about it incites outrage and instigates websites and books against this deception. If they don’t correct this distortion it is going to split the Church and cause the sheep to stray away from organized religion all together!

There is money making teaching principles that are not supported by the word. The lasted and most
outrageous one is you can actually give your way out of Debt as in the testimonies of some 700 partners.
How do you give your way out of debt when you don’t even have money to honor your debt to your creditors. I was not born yesterday. Is it more to these testimonies than meets the eye? Is this the whole truth, or have other parts been omitted? I will try it by taking my rent money and tithing it to see if I can get a job or get more money in return and if you don’t here back then I will be living in my car somewhere. Wish me luck tithers. I’m bold and willing to step out there and give it the benefit of the doubt because I’m just that desperate for a positive change in my finances!
Obe & Proud tither will you take me in if I land on the streets?
I am taking you at your word because you sounded real.

No one hates OB or the rest of the tithe payers and the Pharisee types. Who-ever implied that? What we hate is the distortion of God’s character by saying God demands ten percent payment in order to bless you!

Don,
Don’t let desparate times make you feel desparate. Everybody can continue to quote scripture all day long but at the end of the day the answer is the same. Faith. Faith in God. What everybody seems to forget is this – everything we have is because of God. He has a plan for all of us. Everybody isn’t going to be rich. Everybody isn’t going to be poor. We will have exactly what He wants us to have and in His time. And all we need to do is believe in Him and love Him. He doesn’t want us to irresponsibly throw it all away. We need to act responsibly. If we can be trusted with a little He will trust us with more. Instead of relying on everybody to throw scriptures at you – read your Bible yourself – everyday. You will find the answers there. It may not be monetary riches or even milk money but you will have peace. God Bless.

AFTER ALL YOUR FAVORITE PROSPERITY PREACHER NEEDS ANOTHER JET AIRPLANE OR DESIGNER THOUSAND DOLLAR SUIT!
JUST KIDDING. SINCE YOUR JESUS LOVES YOU SO MUCH, WHY DO YOU HAVE TO PAY HIM TO ANSWER YOUR PRAYERS IN THE FIRST PLACE!
I EVEN KNOW THAT IS UNREASONABLE AND I DON’T OWN A BIBLE YET.

DOUBTING GOD IS REAL
We all fight against the will of God but Jesus forgives us if we come to him. For God so loved the world that he gave his son whoever believes in him will have eternal life. Love everyone now that is a huge demand that can only come from God. We can’t do it on our own. Think about it our love is so selfish putting things, personal opinions, money, and pleasure ahead of truth that heals the world. The love that we know is true gives up everything in the world.
Jesus gave up everything for the poor and hurting. His diciples did the same. Jesus must increace and we must decreace. Jesus has not made the road to understanding his love a bed of roses but a crown of thorns. Knowing truth brings many sufferings but the love of Jesus also brings joy.
Suffering is part of growing to love and understand God. I pray that you will look to the real Jesus not Christian leaders who expect money. Don’t even look to a writer like myself. Weigh what Jesus of the Bible and what Jesus has put into your heart while you pray for understanding. You will find a cross and love. God talks to everyone everyday but understanding involves loss of yourself. Bad things happen to nice people, mean people and everyone on earth.
Many who want to share Jesus make alot of mistakes myself included. Our imperfect love hurts alot of folks as we learn about Jesus somtimes. Jesus allows imperfect people to share his love but he is who we want to get not necisarily everything coming from a speaker or writer.
You will know the people who Jesus wants you to learn from as he directs you. You will begin to love everyone even those confused preachers who think Jesus needs them to get paid. All of us are pretty selfish myself included and we all are very destructive without the love of Jesus. I critisise money preachers but Jesus forgives those who love him. In Heaven all will be made fair. Don’t doubt Jesus becase of preachers or suffering.
Look for his love, your history, the Bible and the history of the world can lead you to Jesus. You will find Jesus if you can accept the God who showed his love by being tortured to death for a world that hated him. Jesus is for loosers but we will gain everything that we need for eternal rewards.
I pray that you can say with confidence somday, Christ in us!

Hello Christians,
I was given a small pocket bible by some people passing out tracks and Bibles on my College Campus. The one they were giving out contains nothing but the New Testament and Psalms. Since I had been heavy into New Age Mantras and the Secret (Laws of Attraction)I normally would have adamantly refused any thing Christian. My excuse was Christianity was too narrow minded. When I told the guy handing me the bible that he said to me great since you are not narrow minded you will read this and walked away. He said a good place to start was in the Gospel of John.
Now I am hooked! I Jesus and to serve him with. I work on Sundays and weeknights but need a good Church. In the meantime my question is that the New Testament I’m been reading does not say that there is a tithe commandment for those first Churches anywhere. Also my Jewish friends have more than a few Feast days and Jewish Holidays. I called a Christian I knew from High School and true to form Christians do not celebrate any Jewish feast days or Jewish rituals. Now I am really confused. I never was circumized so this is one thing I am glad that I don’t have to do and I do eat pork but have no problem given it up.
I plan on getting a full size bible with the Old and New Testament. Any thoughts on this?
Dewayne says
Gerald I have been a Christian for years and want to help you avoid the pitfall of the tithe trap. Please read 2 Cor. 9:7 and realize that no organization controls your giving. Decide in your heart what to give and don’t let anyone scare you into giving 10% as a mandate. God will love you regardless of the amount and his word is clear on this if you read 2 Cor. 9:7. Welcome to the church family brother!
Gerald says
Which is the right bible Old Testament or New Testament and if both are right how do you mix them and observe both commandments when the New does not have what my Jewish friends celebrate to date.
Like I said I want Jesus and to serve and please him but I am confused as to why the Old and New Testaments don’t command the same feast and observances like the Sabbath. My Jewish friends say it is on Saturday not Sunday. Didn’t the God say observe the Saturday one. I may not know much but I really want to do the right thing. I also plan on breaking up with my live in girl-friend. She Catholic and said she goes to confession and God forgives her. Everything is just so mixed up. People say the Old Testament is hard to understand but why are they saying different things and have different observances and Holidays? Jesus was a Jew and he kept went to Jewish feast and the Jewish temple to worship.
I am willing to accept the truth why is the Old Testament different from the new laws?

Thank you Don and everyone taking the time to read think and reply. Thank you all for seeking the will of Jesus in your lives I cannot wait to see you all in heaven and see your tesimonies. The following long post is about Jonah being like money tithe preachers and Suffering Christian leadership that dose not expect 10% from other Christians.
I pray this blog helps all of us to bless others and challenges you to let Christ be expanded in our lifes. Loving Jesus brings Joy but spreading love to everyone always causes loss for every Christian. The law is dead along with the tithe systems and rigid ancient Jewish systems of Jewish govenment.
All Christians are priest now so Christian tithing is absurd. Priest did not tithe but recieved the tithes from the Levites. We are all a chosen generation a royal priesthood with one teacher The holy Spirit and one Sheapard “Pastor” Jesus the good sheapard. Yes there are elders, those who have suffered the greatest for Jesus who deserve honor.
However Jonah is a good example of a minister like many American Christian leaders who was comfortable paying for his own ticket to Tarshish with his own ministry (As opposed to exactly What God wanted). He did not love the situation that God chose for him. The situation was his enemy. “Go to Nineva” said God but Jonah chose a more comfortable path for himself where he did not have to love his enemies.
Sacrificial enemy loving missionaries are the best Christian leaders. Those who have sacrificed the most for Jesus seem to ask for the least money for themselves in my experience. Too many American Christian leaders have the weakness of expecting 10% of others cash thinking that without the Money tithe payment system- to proffesional Christian leaders, Jesus cannot build his church effectivly. They think no mony tithe sysem equals very little real ministry. No pros getting paid equals not much real ministry in the opinions of too many Christian leaders.
No Friends, Jesus wants us all to be ministers. If we lift him up he will draw the whole world to himself. Jesus can use non-profit governmet licenced organisations but most of the real work is done by Jesus believing people. That is the true Church Jesus beliving people ministering by dying to themselves in love of Jesus each moment.
By this they will know we are Christians by our love one to another. We need to have hearts striving to minister like Jesus not like the ministry of Jonah.
Jonah was rebuked by God with the great fish. Our own surface love somtimes needs a strong rebuke, like Paul rebuked Peter and the rest of the Diciples when they would not eat with the Gentile believers in Galatians 5 I do believe. Peter was practicing a kind of racism seaparating to eat with the Jews alone. When we are selfish we all need to be rebuked becase our selfishness is not the kind of service that Jesus wants for the world.
Jonah preached even on the boat about God but because of him the storm arose he almost killed all the poor sailors who piked him up. When he sacrificed and dove overboard the storm ended. Christain leaders today are often doing great spiritual dammage in the name of their expected money tithes.
Jonah did not love the people the way he should but he preached and thousands were saved by God. Christian leaders of today take money and feel entitled, many are saved by God but Jesus wants correct hearts. He is the one who saves anyways.
What should we choose OK ministry cheap love, comfortable Christian leadership, which hurts and misleads a few people along the way becase we are selfish or expencive sacrificial love in true missionary spirit.
I am a comfortable person who dose not want to go to Nineva to love my enemies. I especially find it hard accepting every situation Jesus brings to me becase I am rebellius like Jonah. I know I am wrong. I fear change, so did Jonah. I think many Christain leaders love the predictability of the money tithe system. I don’t need comfortable people to look up to.
I am as stubborn as Jonah so I do not need subborn Christian leaders who don’t even know that they are demanding comfort for themselves at the expence of the comfort of those who they say they lead in Christ. I forgive them becase they are like me.
Chist like leadership looses so that the Lost and hurting gain. Money tithing makes comfort too easy for a Christ like Christian ministry. Be like Jesus not like Jonah.
Thanks for considering and reading
James says
The problem I have with tithing is that it is a direct attack on the goodness and character of Jesus.
It is saying I doubt Jesus fulfilled the law and paid in full for everything I need including for my health and daily necessities.
It says you doubt Jesus when he said ask and it shall be given
if only you receive and believe that God knows what you need.
It is saying God can only bless you if you pay for it. It denies that Jesus paid it all in full thereby it makes people think they pay for the promises that Jesus gave without payment.
It places great emphasis on materialism money as the main way to be blessed. It encourages wolves in sheeps clothing to profit off of the poor who are in desperate need of a healing or provision. It makes it all about blessings come from the money you pay God and not what Jesus came has has freely given.
It is a doctrine that belittles the ones that can’t tithe and makes the ones that can prideful and braggarts.
I hear horror stories of Pastors kicking people out of Ministries they want to participate in because they can’t tithe. If they do their is no help when they lose a job. Neither can they explain away why tithers still get sick or laid off from work. They turn it around and say the tither lacked faith. If they had enough faith to tithe off of very little income then they did have faith.
Tithing is not a commandment by Paul or any Apostle to the Gentile and early Church. No one can bring a Scripture that says it either. They will probably write it into a new translation Bible in the future to keep the tithes coming. They should teach to tithe to keep the Church going not to enforce a Jewish obsolete law. When people start reading their New Testament Bible, realize the truth and speak the truth they label you a trouble maker and divisive element in the Church just because we don’t go along with the way they manipulate the word to collect their tithes. More people would find Christianity and Pastors sincere and credible if they just taught tithing truthfully.
