Non-Tithing Churches, Organizations, & Denominations

Here you will find a list of churches, organizations, & denominations that have taught against tithing. I have found many people who are curious about non-tithing churches in their area that support their views. This list is not complete by any means, and I don’t think it even scratches the surface of all the locations out there. There is also a list of pastors or theologians who taught against tithing. Please take the time to submit other non-tithing churches in the form at the bottom of the page.

Non Tithing Christian Organizations

119 Ministries

https://www.119ministries.com/teachings/video-teachings/detail/tithing-is-it-for-today/

“However, it must be understood that all tithes were intended for either the Priests, Levites or simply brought to the temple for other purposes.  Since there is no Priests, Levites or temple in existence today, biblically speaking, you can’t tithe.”

Christianity Works

Christianity Works is a non-denominational media ministry. Producing Christian television and radio programs that we provide free of charge to over 1,350 Christian, community, commercial and government-owned stations throughout the world.

https://bernidymet.com/why-i-dont-believe-in-tithing/

“I don’t believe for one moment that the Bible teaches us to tip God His 10% under compunction. In fact, that’s the last thing it teaches us to do. So instead, let’s do what the Bible actually does teach us to do.

God calls us to give generously (2 Cor 8:1,2), sacrificially (2 Cor 8:3-6), deliberately (2 Cor 9:6.7) and cheerfully (2 Cor 9:7).”

– Berni Dymet, CEO of Christianity Works

Dallas Theological Seminary

http://www.dts.edu/read/is-tithing-bibical/

“tithing is biblical like polygamy, slavery, and animal sacrifices are biblical. These concepts are included in the Bible. But they are all part of another covenant, one replaced by the New Covenant in the work of Christ.”
– Dr. Glenn Kreider, professor of Theological  Studies

Moody Bible Institute

https://www.moodymedia.org/articles/tithing/

“Tithing is never mentioned by any of the New Testament writers as a compulsory behavior of the church, but generous giving is emphatically expected.”

Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

https://equip.sbts.edu/video/tithing-required-today/

“I would say is a tithe required, 10% tithe. I would say, no, because the tithe is part of the mosaic covenant, it’s part of the mosaic law, the covenant made at Sinai with Moses and with Israel. And the New Testament is very clear, we’re not under that covenant any longer. Galatians 3, Romans 7, Hebrews 9 and 10.

The Berean Call

“I don’t think tithing is for Christians. Everything belongs to the Lord…I don’t read anything in the New Testament saying that we give 10%”

– Dave Hunt, founder of The Berean Call

The Master’s Seminary

“Introduction to New Covenant Theology”

https://web.archive.org/web/20150217033228/http://www.tms.edu/tmsj/tmsj18f.pdf

“Infant baptism, Sunday as Sabbath, along with tithing, are viewed as remnants of the Old Covenant system that some Christians have mistakenly carried over into the New Covenant era.”

Groups, Sects, & Denominations

Anabaptists

Another very disturbing feature of the 16th-century Anabaptist movement was its opposition to paying tithes. This state-church tax was experienced by the poor as oppressive and provoked frequent protests (for example in the peasants’ movement of 1524-1526), but it was foundational to the Christendom system and defended by both church and state with determination and increasing desperation. Anabaptists, in common with other radical groups, rejected the state churches’ approach to tithing as unjust and based on bad biblical interpretation.

https://amnetwork.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Unpacking-the-Core-Convictions-Study-Course.pdf

Leaders of these groups included Felix Mantz, Conrad Grebel, Simon Stumpf, and Wilhelm Reublin, all of whom Zwingli had an impact on. Hubmaier, the Hutterites, and Thomas Müntzer also opposed the exacting of tithes. The Anabaptists maintained that the New Testament taught nothing about tithing and paints a picture of Christians having all things in common.

Church of Christ

There seems to be no centralized organizing body that administrates for the Churches of Christ, but doing an online search for “Church of Christ Tithing” reveals many websites and articles for individual Churches of Christ that teach against tithing. I cannot find a single place where this organization as a whole has taken this stand, but certainly, a considerable majority do not believe in tithing. Here are some links below that I came across just on the first page of google

Grace Communion International

GCI is an international Christian fellowship with about 50,000 members formed into 900 churches spread across 100 countries.

The old covenant required 10 percent. The new covenant does not specify a percentage, nor do we. However, the new covenant admonishes people to give what they can, and tithing still provides an instructive point of comparison. For some people, 10 percent may be too much. But some will be able to give more, and some are doing so.

Jehovah’s Witnesses

The commandment to tithe, or contribute a tenth of one’s belongings, was part of the Law given to the ancient nation of Israel. However, the Bible makes it clear that this Law—including the “commandment to collect tithes”—does not apply to Christians.

Members Church of God International

Wikipedia: “Much of their funding is provided by voluntary contributions from members and personal donations from the Overall Servants. MCGI does not practice tithing and neither accept any contribution or donation from non-members nor offer any religious service in return for any financial payment”

No official quote on the members Church of God International website, but quotes of members are below. Eliseo Fernando Soriano, the founder, has also publicly spoken against the usage of tithes.

Puritans & Pilgrims

“But at the same time, Pennsylvania gained a reputation as the “best poor man’s country,” free of feudal elites, established churches, tithes, discriminatory oaths, high taxes, compulsory military service, and war. While Pennsylvania prospered, Quakers prospered more than others.”

Separatists

That the due maintenance of the Officers aforesaid, should be of the free and voluntary contribution of the Church, that according to Christ’s ordinance, they which preach the Gospel may live of the Gospel: and not by Popish Lordships and Livings, or Jewish tithes and Offerings.
