There’s much argument about this question – Was Jesus Poor? Of course, he wasn’t poor, he was God and owned everything. But aside from that, when we look at his manhood on earth, I think there are obvious examples in the bible that illustrate that he was poor, and other times it illustrates that he was rich. One example that comes to mind which seems he was poor, is when peter came to Jesus and asked about paying the temple tax. Instead of Jesus pulling out his nice thick leather wallet and flipping the cash to Peter, Jesus performs a necessary miracle in order to conjure up the cash. An example that illustrates Jesus’ wealth is the account of his expensive cloak being rolled for dice and wagered on, while he’s being crucified. So, was Jesus rich? Yes. Was he poor? Yes.
Come on! To argue about whether Jesus was rich or poor, is it worth it? He owned every piece of ground that he walked on while on earth, even his cross. But at the same time the bible says he became poor like us and came from his riches to poverty. You see we don’t know what rich is.
1 Corinthians 8:9
that though He was rich, yet for your sakes, He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich
For thirty-three years Jesus came down from the riches he had and lived with the poor. Yeah, he could have been rich on earth, and yes, he could have been poor. But the point is no matter how rich he was on earth he adopted poverty. The goal for every believer is to adopt poverty in some way. I can’t explain or describe to you how. What riches have you given up for the sake of others?

Hi Thomas,
The context of Jesus being “poor” in the NT does not point to poverty or penury as is commonly thought of today.
I think the article provides a much needed balance that many Christians often miss, especially when they argue immoderately to one extreme or the other. ‘So, was Jesus rich? Yes. Was he poor? Yes.‘ His passion was not about living in penury or affluence.
We see just about the same thing in Paul’s life and ministry, who declared that he was instructed “BOTH to be full and to be hungry, BOTH to abound and to suffer need” (Philippians 4:12). In whatever state he found himself, he learned to be content (verse 11).
As far as I’m aware, Scripture does not command any believer to deliberately pursue a life of affluence as his “goal”; nor is anyone commanded to pursue a life of penury. In practical living, we’re exhorted to “USE the world”, but “as NOT ABUSING it” (cf. 1 Cor. 7:31). While doing so, one should ever be mindful of one thing: “for the sake of others” – which the article points us to.
In all things, please people, we should always endeavour to avoid being unnecessarily polarised.
Regards.

Jesus was not rich. Earthly riches relate to money. They had money, taxes, and an economy back then too in Jesus’ time. Jesus was born to a carpenter, so he wasn’t born into wealth. And we do know from reading the New Testament that Jesus did not handle money. The guy was penniless. He told us to store our treasures up in heaven, and not on earth. Earthly treasures are part of Satan’s world. So I would say that Jesus was not rich in terms of money or material possessions. He had the divine powers to make himself rich if he wanted to, but he resisted the temptation by Satan to do so. Jesus had nothing to do with money and material possessions on earth other than the garments on his back.

I like what jeff said, Jesus was not rich by our standards. His daily provisions were supplied, He lacked nothing. Food, shelter, etc.. God supplied all his needs and the same goes for all believers. God is our provider. Jesus was rich in many aspects but the most important was “Love”. The greatest is Hear O Israel, the lord thy God is one Lord and thy shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, all thy soul, with all thy mind and with all thy strength and “Thy shall love thy neighbor as thyself.” That is the point.

Hi,
Please quote any scripture that supports your findings and we will discuss it but please do not use any other book or you will be deceived by thieves and so call pastors lusting for money and wealth,
Greed has many ways of twisting scriptures for profit, I hope you know the diffrence of being blessed and coveteousness that Christ warnned us about.
Unless you have money you will never know or understand why Jesus warnned us about the love of money.

But friend i meant “Bible verses” above which there is no proof needed.
I have read many books regarding the wealth of Jesus.. assuming that “He was rich” or “He was poor”.
But the wonder which i saw about this book is… It says like “It is there in this verse” and when i went through the Bible it was there..

Remember, Jesus said, It is harder for a rich man to get into the Kingdom of Heaven than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.
Joseph says
I realized that most people argue in favour of or against Christ being rich in order to justify or condemn the prosperity doctrine. Well, I won’t bother trying to answer whether or not Jesus was rich but I’ll go straight to answer the Christian’s poverty or prosperity question. I believe it will do so much good to the Christian to read Jesus words in the entire Chapter 10 of Mark’s gospel especially verses 21 to 30. Most people stop at verse 25 and think that’s the end of Christ’s message on the topic. Please don’t be like that, read on till the end of the chapter to get the bigger and complete picture. Why would I argue in favour of poverty after reading down to verse 30? Verse 29 says “there is no man that has left…” Meaninng it would apply to whosoever, wherersoever, whensoever so long as he foresakes all, and takes up his cross to follow Christ.
The hundred fold harvest is available in this lifetime and eternal life in the world to come! Read for yourself and may you be blessed by the Word.
Mark 10:21-30 KJV
21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?
27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.
29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,
30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
