- 10% was not the minimum amount for Israel. They gave less than 10% at times. (Hebrews 7:4; Numbers 31:28-30)
- The New Testament does not command, address, or mention tithing to the Gentiles who are unfamiliar with Jewish practices.
- Jesus’ own ministry operated from freewill offerings. He also commanded the disciples to receive freely. (Luke 8:1-3, Matthew 10:8-10)
- The children of God under his family are not taxed. They are free to give (Matthew 17:25; Galatians 4:5)
- Tithing was not a requirement prior to the Mosaic law considering Jacob freely offered God 10%. (Genesis 28:20)
- None of the Israelites tithed while outside of the promised land. (Deuteronomy 12:5)
- Abraham’s tithe was under the Old Covenant, which was established before Moses and was also fulfilled (Genesis 3; Hebrews 8:13)
- Giving would be the only spiritual gift with a minimum requirement and not led by the Spirit.
- There are no commands to modify tithing with how we practice it today, so people have to make up correlations to get it to fit into the church.
- Israelites who did not grow food or raise animals did not tithe. (Leviticus 27:30)
- Giving is not by compulsion. (2 Corinthians 9:6-9)
- The Levitical priests were required to serve 25 years, and just like tithing, the New Testament doesn’t recall this requirement either
- Unless giving 10% is the spiritual nature of God’s holiness, then it falls under the same classification of other interim tokens in the Old Covenant that Christ fulfilled
Sal says
If people would stop being so lazy and trifling and start really reading their bibles through and not just rushing through it they would know there was money back in the Old Testament and they could have tithed money not food if God had wanted them to do that but God didn’t. Jacob’s other sons (Joseph brothers) went to Egypt to buy food back because of the famine all over the world for seven yrs. This resulted in the Joseph’s dream being fulfilled that his brothers would bow down to him.

There is so much venom coming through in these comments. It’s unbelievable. For those of you who don’t believe in tithing — don’t do it. God will discuss with you on judgment day. For those that do and feel it is the right thing for you — then continue. You can ask God if you interpreted his Word correctly or incorrectly on judgment day. For me, I give. Call it a tithe or whatever you want. I give of money, time and talent because I love Jesus. I don’t give to Pastors or churches — I give to God. I don’t give to get back from MAN. I give to God and his work. I don’t give to be placed on any pedestal, nor to be recognized by any organization. I give to God. I don’t give to stand in a “tithe” line as PEG wrote, nor do I give to became a church board member. I don’t need what MAN offers. I only give to GOD. I don’t give because I feel I would be cursed if I don’t. I don’t believe that lie. I give because I want to see His kingdom grow on this earth and that people will come to know Him. Pretty simple and biblical. If those of you who despise the church and it’s leadership so much — then choose another path. You will have to answer to your decisions just as I will some day. For me, I will continue to give as God blesses me –and by the way, not always with financial return, but through health and peace in my home, through business opportunities that are nothing short of a miracle. God looks on the heart.

I wonder if you give your money to any ministry including those who deceive people for financial gain?In the old covenant tithing was compulsory.GIVING and PAYING are not the same.If you break the sabbath in the old testament, the bible says they will kill you.Just because we are discussing tithing does not mean I dont honour God with my finances.Humility says to take the lowest seat. When we truly walk in his humility He reveals his secrets with us to share with does who delight in His lowly ways.Dear tithers and non tithers we are having a friendly discussion here about tithing, giving and honouring Jesus the one we all love.I am not judging anyone I am just pointing out the scriptures for us to examine closely.JESUS WARNED US BECAUSE HE DIDNT WANT WOLVES TO STEAL THE MONEY THAT BELONGS TO HIM.Apostle Paul said that JESUS CANT BE A PRIEST IF HE WAS HERE ON EARTH RIGHT NOW.HE CANT RECEIVE ANY TITHE AS A PRIEST OR ANY OFFERING.Hebrews 8:4(NLT)

Did Marty tell us yet if he keeps the Sabbath all the time without fail since that was the law too?
Keep me posted!

I believe OB when he said he tithes because he loves the Lord and not to avoid a curse but come on OB since you are only human don’t you want a blessing in return because who wouldn’t? Regarding the other pro-tithe advocate Marty, I believe he keeps the Sabbath Law since he said he believes the Ten commandments are still for today. Good for him! Don’t expect an answer from him tonight cause Sabbath started today (Friday) this evening when the Sun went down till Saturday evening when the Sun goes down again. Sabbath keepers won’t talk, work, watch television, drive, cook or do anything but pray or read the Bible (Torah) till Saturday evening when the Sun goes down. My good friend who keeps the Sabbath thinks we are all going to hell for breaking this commandment. I hope she is wrong!!!!

Gospel of John 5
Jesus told a paralyzed man who laid at the pool near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem to take up his bed (mattress/pallet)and walk on the Sabbath. When the Pharisees found out it was Jesus who healed the man on the Sabbath they were all the more determined to kill him because he had done this healing on the Sabbath. The only law Jesus broke was the Sabbath because he said he was Lord over the Sabbath. He created the Sabbath for Man not the other way around. Marty why keep the Sabbath Jesus redeemed you from the curse of the law and nailed any law you broke to the Cross. Whom the Lord set free is free indeed. You cannot earn your way by keeping the Law, if so Jesus would not have had to die. I pray this helps when you read this tomorrow evening because Peter called law keeping a yoke of bondage that he and his ancestors could not keep. Read it in Acts and God bless your heart for even trying.
Let Marty keep the Sabbath and butt out! says
This is regarding Marty that tithes and keeps the Sabbath because he believes in keeping the Laws that God handed down in the Bible. Leave him alone! There are a billion people in this world who do things their way and you are not going to change them. We cannot read this man’s mind as to why he keeps the Sabbath Law or pay tithes. We are worship God with their time and treasure as they see fit. My best friend is a Seventh Day Adventist Christian. I am not ready to be that faithful yet but I admire people that are sold out to their beliefs at least they are not being hypocrites.
Let Marty keep the Sabbath and butt out! says
Also, if we let people worship and believe as they see fit wars would end tomorrow! This is why some religions causes wars.
Ruthie says
There would still be wars if everybody in the world were agnostic or athiest. Ever heard of Stalin and all those wars started by those Marxist Communist regimes?? No one is saying Marty cannot keep the Sabbath or any other Jewish Old Testament Law. You are not understanding the conversation. The issue is this, if Marty is keeping the Sabbath since he was promoting the fact that the Ten Commandments had not changed because as he said some Old Testament Laws had not changed and he used the Ten Commandments as his example. So asking him if he is keeping the Sabbath which is one of the Ten Commandments was fair game. The Sabbath was kept in the Old Testament from Saturday evening ending Sunday evening. The question is does the Church still keep the Sabbath and if not this was not a good example to use for the reason to still tithe since the Christian Church with the exception of Seventh Day Adventist do not keep the Sabbath. Which is no activity at all on Saturday evening.
Of course Jews are not stoning people to death for breaking the Sabbath Law. Jesus told the Law keeping Pharissees and Sadducees to go and learn what this means, “I (God) desires Mercy and not sacrifice”. Which was a quote from the Old Testament. I think the majority of people that were making the case for the law being replaced by what Jesus did on the Cross would like for Marty to understand that to keep the law means to keep all the over six hundred plus Jewish OT laws. If you are not doing that you come off looking a little hypocritical and contradictory.
Allie says
No, Ruthie you got the Sabbath day wrong. It is Friday evening till Saturday evening. Orthodox Jews attend services on Saturday, the Sabbath God originally gave them
I live near their house of worship and see them walking miles for their services. Someone made a point that we need to fact check when someone speaks or quotes bible verses for ourselves. We all can misspeak if we are not careful.
I for one wish to hear if the Marty that has defended tithing and said the law has not all been abolished should then be in support of the Sabbath as well to be consistent.
JJ says
I doubt Marty or any of the other keepers of the tithe law for God’s favor are keeping the Sabbath law.
Which proves they are not logical thinkings but parrots and clones of what they hear passed down to them from their Church Pulpits.

I bet Marty is a Seventh day Adventist therefore he could very well be keeping the Sabbath law too. I think it’s kind of cool to have a day of rest from all activity. The Pharisee crowd in Jesus day really gave Sabbath keeping a bad image with all that criticism of Jesus healing on the Sabbath and all.
Keep the Sabbath too if you keep the tithe law says
If you keep the tithe law then keep the Sabbath law too. If not your tithe doctrine makes no sense because you must keep them all to be justified before God. No one can and no one will. Why do you people think Jesus came?
TO FULFILL THE LAW IN OUR PLACE!
A way to get the tithe Police to leave us alone says
Ask the tithe Police if they are keeping the Sabbath Law (by ceasing from work and activity Friday evening till Saturday evening). Thanks for just giving us a way to shut them up for condemning us for not keeping the tithe law. I do not believe the tithe commanders are keeping the Sabbath and I would be willing to bet my most prized material possession that 90% percent of them don’t!
anonymous too says
So you are willing to bet 90 percent of the lawkeeping tithe promoters don’t keep the Sabbath?
You must mean 99 percent don’t keep the Sabbath. The other one being Seventh Day Adventist Christians who I feel are being consistent in their beliefs on Old Testament law keeping. They also observe the Old Testament dietary (food) laws and do not eat forbidden foods like pork.
anonymous too says
Support your place of worship by giving as your act of worship but don’t label it as a demand that God must be paid to answer prayers and bless you is all we are saying.
The topic should have been tithing is not a requirement for answered prayers or favors from God. He gave you favor when he picked you and saved you. Salvation is the cake and the ice-cream is providing your every day needs. Paid in full means he did not leave a balance owing or anything unpaid for you, so this makes us want to do all we can in return to worship and give of your bounty. The misunderstanding is that some think we are against tithing and maybe the title of this blog has much to do with that. We are not against tithing just the way the subject is misused to cause fear and condemnation to the poor who lack the finances to tithe. It is also unfair to penalize the poor and not allow them to participate in Ministries and shame them over the Pulpit. Maybe some kind of legislation should be passed to prevent this type of abuse, because that is exactly what it is–Emotional ABUSE!
anonymous too says
If I had time I could list at least ten major abuses surrounding how the tithe is collected-horror stories abound and whoever protests are labeled rebellious and stingy.
How many people has this driven from attending Church. Maybe George Barna the Christian Pollster can research this.
Allie says
No they are not keeping the Sabbath and are probably eating Ham for Thanksgiving, they seem like a bunch of none thinking robots if they cannot see this is crazy to enforce only one OT Law when they are not even Jews.
Anonymous says
Someone said something that makes a great deal of sense. You don’t have to pay God for favor because He favored you by saving you and being his child means you are joint-heir with Christ and have all rights and privileges of being his child just believing this will entitle you to proper and by his (Jesus) stripes be healed for free. Now go and worship him with giving all you can but don’t void it all out by hating others.
PEG says
Let’s take a vote, if the tithe or else be cursed with a curse from God aren’t keeping the Sabbath shouldn’t they just shut up about tithing. Let’s not let them get by with picking and choosing which OT laws to keep, someone has to make them accountable and question why many people support Pastors who beat the Lord’s Sheep unmercifully for not tithing and are not challenging them on this. Keep the Sabbath too or else should they Shut Up?
