From the beginning of mankind, God called prophets to teach the people. TITHING was instituted by God through his prophets of old. Yes, that was then.
The people eventually turned away from God and his prophets (apostasy). Now in these latter days, God has sent prophets again showing His love and concern for His children and to help prepare them for His Coming.
These are the last days. God is not going to leave us without prophets during the most important time in the history of the world: right before the Second Coming.
As in old times, God has called prophets—righteous men chosen- given authority to teach His word and lead His Church today.
What I’m saying is His Church today not only has prophets, it has the fullness of his Gospel to help prepare the righteous, and all who will listen and change their lives, before His Coming. He has sent prophets and with them, his priesthood, commandments and vital ordinances. TITHING is but a small portion of His commandments, but it is vital to the building of His kingdom in the last days.
TITHING is used to build the kingdom of God on the earth: to built churches, temples, missions, printed materials, etc. Other voluntary donations are also given to help the poor, those in need, missionaries, disaster relief victims, etc.
You have tried to justify tithe by introducing a fact that God spoke to people through prophets and your own opinions which are not Biblically verifiable and tending towards being contradictory. So let me agree with you that God used to speak to “Israelites” through prophets such as Moses, Isaiah, Micah and others. You seem to have omitted the fact that before prophets through whom he sent messages, he spoke directly to people such as Adam, Noah, Abraham and Moses and through visions or dreams to such as Abraham, Jacob and Joseph. That is how he wanted to speak to Israelites at Mount Sinai if they had not fled so he gave His Commandments through Moses. But dissatisfied with this mode of speaking to people, he promised to send a man in whom he would put his words. Deuteronomy 18:18 says: “I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.” So when Jesus came as man and told us the correct will of God, Hebrews 1:1-2 tells us: “On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.” But Jesus Himself felt that we needed further elucidation of his words and therefore in John 14:26 said: “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” When this comforter teaches us, we shall not need any other teacher or prophet (not even your invention of later day prophet) Jeremiah 31:33 reiterated in Hebrews 8:10-11 God tells us that: tells us that after those days, the Lord will put his Word in our minds, and inscribe them on our hearts so that: “No longer will each one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest”.
So kindly, you did not read about the later day prophets from the Bible and are an invention from a figment of your imagination. You are packaging Gods Word in a wrapper of your own opinions! You say: “What I’m saying is His Church today not only has prophets…”. Yes! It is you who is saying it not the Word of God! As for the tithe being used for building churches, temples, missions, printed materials, etc, just ask for “voluntary donations given cheerfully without compulsion each according to his/her ability”.
Amen…. The tithe is to be eaten in Gods presence by the tithier except for certain years (year 3 & 6) and even then the tithier ate from the tithe….the only requirement was not mourning while eating the Tithe. This symbolizes the marriage feast of the Lamb. Praise God! This is the same for all other non sin related sacrificial offerings … They were eaten by the sacrificer with a portion for the Levites/Priest. Also, the tithe is of the produce of the land of Israel. God loves a cheerful giver!
Yes! Tithes are to be used to feed people and celebrate for all that God has provided. It was not meant to be a tax collected by the church. The Law of the Tithe is very specific in Deuteronomy, but people have warped its relevance and Christian churches have used it for their own selfish needs. Churches can ask for gifts but not tithes and should not distort God’s Word for their own selfish desires. Jesus never needed money but his teachings endure. If Jesus wanted a big building he would have built it as he was a carpenter. Jesus’ church was the people not the building. He never asked for a tithe. This is an injustice and one reason why people are leaving the church. Thousands of years ago the church was the storehouse. Today it is a bank and I can no longer buy food at a church to celebrate so I must take my tithes elsewhere.

Anon, in reference to your anology that church is not building, how would you describe a situation where someone for e.g, is searching for a church in an area, may be one of the days in the week like Monday and l point to a building and said, this is the church . If people really study the word of God then you would know that when Jesus started his church that people’s homes was the place where they were taught. And the home owners or renters would pay their own bill. So there was no need to take people’s money. But it was the crops of the land and the cattle and such that you would bring to the storehouse to help feed the poor those that didn’t have. The Word of God goes on to say owe no man nothing. Church leaders don’t preach or teach on that scripture. If any is in debt and you giving money to the building or lining the church leaders pockets or putting g them in million dollars homes then shouldn’t they help you get out of debt. But any way how can one pay off his debt if the leaders always got their hands out. And yes the Holy Spirit of the woke me up early one morning and begin to minister to me about tithes. Very well said! Tithe is not money but food. It is why the early Church did not give any prominence to tithing but rather in Apostle Paul’s writing he called monetary payment to the Church “gift” which must be freely given, and no percentage was attached to it. Christ fulfilled the law and he has redeemed us from the curse of the law; so we as Christian are not bound by the law of Moses.
What if we use that 10% of our income to help poor? See here, you find church is built, pastor has car and everything he/she desires. Ofcourse dont expect God to come down tp church and eat the tithe…no no no. It is used by our pastors who sweat when preaching to us for they have no other income maybe. What if, that somebody somewhere who has lacked school fee, something to eat, sleep etc… Using your tithe to bless that person without telling the person that was my tithe…..

What we need to understand is.
1. There is not one scripture throught the entire Bible that requests or requires a MONETARY tithe.
2.Ministry has laboured on Abraham and his (none required) giving of 1/10th.But they don’t make mention of the other 90% that he gave to the King of Sodom who was present at the same time as Melchisedek.
We could go on and on when people diverge from THE FACTS but tithing did not make Abraham rich,he was rich beyond measure before he ever gave 1/10.

I guess that you had a typo error and wanted to alert us to Malachi 3:10. The best way to read that last Book in the Old Testament is to start it write from Chapter 1 verse 1. It will tell you that the Book was a message written by Prophet Malachi exclusively for Israelites. It is not an easy or a good message that other people for whom it was not written should want to enjoin him/herself with those it was written for. It is indeed referred to as “The Burden of the Israelites”! The next verse says that the message excludes all other nations including the descendants of Israel’s own brother Esau. The prophet specifically mentions this so that others who, like you are far from such a relation, know without a doubt that you are excluded from the message!The rest of the Book ( the message) tells why God must break the Covenant signed between Him and the Israelites at Mt. Horeb (Sinai) at which He promised them to be their God if they obey his Commandments. He is telling them that in spite of Him loving them over all other Nations of the world, they still had chosen to disobey him. In the last chapter, He tell them that, since they had not obeyed Him (including not paying the tithes) they deserved the curses he had promised in Deuteronomy 28:15-68. He however says He will not bring the curses on Earth but instead will bring a new Covenant.(Read the very last line of the Old Testament). God was readying the world for the new Covenant which would not be for Israelites only but for all nations of the earth according to His promise to Abraham! He did. He brought us the Gospel (The Good News) though his son and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. he took away the curse of the Law by which we had been tutored until he came. Now we Christians are under the New (Calvary Covenant) not under the Old (Horeb or Sinai Covenant). So why, Oh why are you still adhering to the obsolete,(which as a gentile you were not apart of in the first place) when you have the new and better Covenant. I pray that the Holy Spirit removes from your eyes, the veil that like Moses covers those reading the Old Testament. Receive enlightment in Jesus name. Amen!

The question of tithing in cash or kind arises only if in the first place you are intent on tithing. That question will arise because you are considering a matter that came long before Christianity came to Earth. For a Christian who is led by the teachings of Jesus Christ which are contained in the Books of Gospel and other Books of the New Testament, the question does not arise. Jesus asked you to love and help your neighbor (anyone in need) like the Good Samaritan. He used his time, donkey to carry the hurt man, money to pay for his lodging and treatment. Jesus then said “Go and do likewise.” He also said that when he returns to judge all our actions, he will say that what we did for the least of the poor, we did it for him and will reward us for it. Did he say he will reward us for tithing? No! Did he say he say in what form the help should be money or in kind? No! All he said is help those in need! Why then do we keep on debating about laws of old Testament when we have the Gospel to guide us! Christians should follow teachings of Christ so if we are to debate at all, lets debate on that!

Why is it that whenever the time for tithing comes up in church, the pastor or officiating minister doesn’t or rarely reads Hebrews chapter 7.

Dry good. I have studied the tithe for years and the more I dig into the scriptures, the more I believe only freely giving is New Testament. Some chastise the church member who doesn’t believe it is for today as not hav8ng faith to trust God. I feel religious leaders lack faith and depend on the tithe.

I am sick of these people who claim to be prophets and prophetesses, and act as if they are the elite chosen of God. Scripture says we have more certain prophesy today, the Word.
You do not know the scriptures. The tithe could not be used for certain things like the temple. A temple tax was used, a half shekel. There were many stipulations for where the tithe could come from and who could give it. The last sentence shows your lack of knowledge of scripture. The tithe was specifically used for the widow poor and homeless. The tithe was part of the Levitical Law not the Commandments. Total ignorance on the part of the vast majority of people called Christians has led to multi-millionaire preachers. Not everyone was required to tithe in the Levitical Law. Please, rightly divide the word bout tithing. Tithing supported the government of Israel. The Levites were the government of Israel, not all Levites were priests. Only 1% of the tithe went to the priests. The full tithe only went to the Levites on year 3 and 6, no tithe happened on the 7th year. Look at the cycles of harvests. years 1,2, 4,and 5 the tithe was actually consumed by the people as a feast and celebration of the blessings of Yahweh. He wanted to have a party with His people. The offerings made up the most of what the Levites and Priests had. The Levites also had their own cities with pasture and gardens that supplied food for them. The only difference with the Levites and the other Israelites was the Levites individually couldn’t own that property. However, if you know scripture you will see a Levite could buy other property, but remember in the year of Jubilee all the land had to go back the original owner.
Our taxes pay for our government services just like the Israelites paid the Levites. The Christian religion has a very skewed view of tithing from years of false teaching. The Israelites paid around 30% of their income in offerings, tithes, temple tax. Yahweh said no one was to come to him empty handed.
Today the “seed” teaching is not scriptural. If you look at the actions of Abraham and Jacob, their response of giving a tenth was “if you bless me I will give”. Malachi was an Old Covenant book and if you read it properly, it was written to the Priests not the common people. The store house of the temple could hold only a limited amount of grain. I don’t think they had a way to keep the “tenth animal that past under the rod” there. Also, if a person gave money in place of the grain or animal they had to give 30% of the value instead. So, what do you use to pay your “tithes”?

Why didn’t Paul or the other Apostles teach tithing? Free will giving is for today, not tithing. Money was never a tithable commodity.
Very well said Brian! I have pondered on this many times. Apostle Paul, never taught on tithing but rather, he taught a lot about gift to the Church, this is free-will giving, with no percentage attached to it. I have always felt that if tithing was a requirement for Christians, Apostle Paul would not have ignored such an important matter.

From the little knowledge I have gathered, especially from the verses quoted above, tithes are used for the levites, the fatherless, the strangers and the widows. Now tell me, is this wrong. In my contributions, I have never had an intention to hurt anyone. My intention and purpose has always been to tell Christians what the doctrine of Jesus is. I know that Christians share the Old Testament with Judaism and perhaps other religions and that they tend sometimes to over emphasise on it over the New Testament. I like to remind Christians that as the Book of Malachi recapitulates, summarises, evaluates and gives verdict of the law of Moses (written strictly for Israelites exclusive or all other nations(Malachi 1:2)) failed and gave way to New Testament (36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him.”(John 3:36)). The Gospel of Christ thus, to a Christian takes precedence of all other scriptures. It is thus not me who says tithe or don’t tithe. What I emphasise is what Christ taught and that is to “Love your neighbour as you love yourself.” ! John 4 tells us that we show our love, not by being generous to God whom we have never seen but by minding those in our immediate proximity who need our love, kindness, generosity, care, justice and mercy. So the point is this, if we ignore these so that we take tithes to God in Church, then we shall not have fulfilled his command.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35(NIV))
So, I do not have the authority to tell Christians anything. I have no authority to tell Christians to tithe or not to tithe. I only remind them first that they are Christians not Judaists whose Book is the Old Testament and secondly, because of the first, they should do what their Lord and Saviour commands them in his Gospel/Doctrine found in the New Testament.
I do not ask anyone to believe in what I say and do accordingly. I ask Christians to read the New Testament and heed what it says. If anyone doesn’t like that, the argument is not with me. It is with Jesus who is its author!
In the new testament: (2 Corinthians 9:6-8) are the principals of giving. Tithing is not mentioned here, however, this is how I give to my local church and the Lord has blessed me as a result.

Christians are not oblige to pay tithes because the proper definition of the word tithe is defined as a tenth of a crop and the law actually was not made to regulate Christians but for Christians.
Tithe is not for the New Covenant…just as we know…the law was abolished in Jesus death…Christians should be generous and giving..even more so…but tithe was never to further the building programs.pay for tv time and cause the religious career of a pastor to be supported by the people…many of whom struggle to eat. We all will answer for what we teach…Jesus did not teach the tithe neither did His choice of a gospel preacher to the gentile world…Paul…he never taught tithe to the Christian…its a way used by the modern church system to compel people to give money to further their plans. Jesus said I did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it.
The word is “Fulfill.”
Jesus came to “fulfill” the Law because the Levites who Moses had tasked with teaching it did not teach it properly. The Book of Malachi explains what because of the wrong teaching, the Israelites did wrong hence why God was going to send the one who would refine it. Malachi 3:2-4 says: “…he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap… he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, and the offerings … will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.” When God sent His Son Jesus Christ to Earth, he found people who because of the teaching they received were so intent on fulfilling the Law, they had no compassion and acted like robots. He used the Levite and a Priest who left a dying man on the roadside in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, to show how callously heartless the people had become as a result of dutifulness to the Law like auto. They were so dutiful for example in paying tithes that they would even the vegetables to make sure they gave every tenth one to God, yet these same would not lift a finger to help the poor. Jesus called them hypocrites: “…because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God” (Luke 11:41-42). He told them to go learn what God meant with the words: “I desire mercy and not sacrifice” (Matthew 9:13). To this very day, Jesus is telling Christians the same thing: to understand that tithing was right from the beginning was not an end to itself but a way to collect and distribute food to the poor. He is saying: “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. “ (Malachi 3:8-10) “The Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance among you, and the alien, the orphan and the widow who are in your town, shall come and eat and be satisfied, in order that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do”( Deuteronomy 14:28-29) It is not the act of tithing that attracts God’s blessings: It is the “eating by the poor so that they get satisfied!” So, if you want to follow the Law as refined (or as you say, fulfilled) by Jesus Christ the Son of God and to attract God’s blessings, do your tithing according to his refined Law not according to the old unrefined Law of Moses. If you do that, just as Malachi 3:10 promises, the Psalmist assures you that God will and protects you: He says: “Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. The Lord protects and preserves them— they are counted among the blessed in the land— he does not give them over to the desire of their foes. The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness” (Psalm 41:1-3).
You didn’t quote Luke 11:42 fully. The scripture reads: “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” Jesus right there is saying, “yes you ought to have tithed but you also should be just and love God”. To any who read this comment and do tithe, thank you. My husband is in full time ministry and we not living the high life like so many of the commenters alluded to. My husband took a 30% paycut from his Marketplace job to be full time at our church. He didn’t enter the ministry to get rich and he refuses to except money for the music lessons he gives to the youth in our church. His heart is to see the giftings in these young people cultivated and hopefully used for the glory of God all the days of their lives. I have no doubt that there are pastors that are pour stewards of their church finances, some even try to built a legacy unto themselves, but that’s between them and the Lord. It’s between you and the God whether you tithe or not.

Malakai is actually the introduction of the New Testament, I believe that people are so afraid to give back to God what belongs to Him, and so it’s just an excuse of not wanting to tithe,

We have 80,000 young men and women who are going throughout the world proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and that He is coming to gather his elect on the earth preparatory to the Millennium. I challenge you to read the Book of Mormon as you pray to know of its truth. It does take a humble heart and a contrite spirit to receive your own revelation that it’s true.
Yes, tithing IS an essential part of the Church and Kingdom of God in the last days. Don’t be stubborn. Keep an open mind and heart if you want your won personal revelation. I personally think Tithe is a personal decision between Man and GOD . ..IF we can keep the 10 commandments ..why is it so hard to keep the one Tithing? ..one must have an understanding of why he /she does it? Remember it must come from a Cheerful heart. Check the teachings, Pastor and the progress of the Church ..cause others are out there to use people’s money for their own personal use and forget about the Expansion of the Kingdom.

Christianity is not a personal opinion. It is not even the teachings of any prophet of the old or of the present. Christianity is the teachings of Jesus Christ. Because people want to follow the teachings of the Old Testament prophets, teachings of their own religion (Church) or their own opinions, they make all sorts of claims including that about tithes and tithing. Leave out what Prophets told other people who were not Christians (even if they were people of God for there are many of those who are not Christians), leave out the teachings of churches, religions and priests! Ask yourself the question: “What did Jesus say?” Matthew 23:23 23″Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices-mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.” (Matthew23:23) That is what Jesus taught. He values justice and mercy to your needy neighbor than dutifulness to your church! When he comes back, he will not judge you on whether and how much you tithed. He will not judge you according to how much you obeyed Old Testament prophets or your church and preachers. He will judge you on what He commanded you. I do not know whether he will have a reward for doing according to your personal opinion! If you are a Christian, what should matter to you is the opinion of your Master: Jesus Christ the Son of God who is our Lord and Saviour and who in John 14:15 says: “If you love me, keep my commands.” Do you love Jesus? If you do, why do you want to follow the commands of Moses and not that of Jesus your Master? God the Father himself commanded you to obey Jesus not the prophets. At the transfiguration on the Mountain when Elijah and Moses were present what did God say? “A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen; listen to Him!”(Luke 9:35). Do what God ordered you. Listen to Jesus. His is all the opinion you need!
I use to tithe before I was inlighting. I said ever excuse in the book to justify doing it such as it don’t matter what the pastor do with the money god will deal with him , witch is true
However the churches today are out of order to justifying tithing first the money should be used to help the poor and it is not . The money is being used to feed mans evil desires of their hearts it is not being used to evangelise and give god his glory . In Christian context, you do not need to wait for three years or even one year to go someplace to thank God for his blessings. We need to first thank God evert time we have a meal and secondly, remember to always help out those who those who do not have. Those Jews who during the time of Jesus on Earth,(especially Pharisees) took the law of tithing so seriously they would even count the leaves of the vegetables they grew an take a tenth to the Temple yet they would not give the littlest coin to a beggar except for a show! Jesus called them hypocrites and said the better thing to do was to be just and show merciful to the less fortunate than to be dutiful tithers. So, for Christians, rather than try to tithe according to the Old Testament Laws given to Israelites by Moses, lets do what Jesus taught us and according to his teachings (Gospel) in the New Testament. Following the teachings of Christ in the New Testament (Not teachings of prophets in the Old Testament) is what makes us Christians.

Hebrews 12:5 says: “…you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again.” This applies to many Christians generally but for the purpose of this board, to specifically to advocates of tithing according to the Old Testament laws. Malachi 3:10 which says: “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it,” is read without putting it into the context in which it was originally commanded by Moses. Tithers understand it to mean that it is the act of tithing which miraculously opens the floodgates of heaven. Unfortunately it is not. The key to what opens the floodgates is in the words “…that there may be food in my house”. That too makes sense only when read with what Moses in Deuteronomy 26:12 said when commanding the Israelites about tithing. He said: “When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.” This tells us that the act of tithing was not the end but only the means to an end. It is not the tithing but the end to which the tithe is put to that opens the floodgates. That end is that the: “Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow” eat the tithe and get satisfied. It is the act of mercy: of feeding the hungry (or generally helping those in need), that touches the heart of God. Mercy NOT tithe, is the key to God’s heart who will in turn open the floodgates of heaven. That is why Jesus in Matthew 23:23 disagreed with and castigated the Pharisees who emphasised on tithing dutifully (so that they neglected to help the poor). He told them: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of (tithe) your spices-mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former”. Yes! They insisted on tithing as a duty to fulfill the law but not as an act of mercy! They tithed but would not give a starving child a crust of bread to eat. Tithing was a sacrifice and deemed sacrifice as what God wanted. They held as sinners those who did not obey the law of taking their tithes to church. Jesus in Matthew 12:7 told them: “If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent”. By “the innocent”, Jesus meant those who rather than take their tithe to church opted to give it to the poor. But who between the tither and the one who helps the poor will be rewarded by Jesus on the Day of Judgment? Jesus says he will reward those who helped the poor in his name: “I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me…” (Matthew 25:35-36). He did not promise to reward those who tithed dutifully. In James 2:13, the Apostle tells us that those who did not show mercy to the needy (even if they had been dutiful tithers) will be judged without mercy. He says:” Judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.”
Your church has taught you to tithe as a duty. That is incorrect teaching and now “…you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. (Hebrews 12:5 says). If your church is doing these things, then by all means give it your tithes and whatever other donations. However, if your church uses tithes and donations collected in the name of God to fund commercial projects, do not give it only the normal Sunday offerings which are enough for its running. Rather than take your tithe to church for use in such projects, use it to buy food for the poor, pay hospital fees for the sick and suffering and unable to pay for treatment etc. u Be blessed with understanding. If you cannot do these things, give your money to genuine and deserving charitable organisations.

Over the years and centuries, Christians have been taught the wrong things about tithing and the scripture on tithing have been grossly misinterpreted either deliberately or indelibrately. I used to tithe myself when I was not enlightened, I just accepted the teachings of my Pastors about tithing, and as a Muslim convert, my knowledge of the scriptures was very limited. I now have a better understand of the scriptures and of tithing through personal bible studies and through the teachings of knowledgeable ministers of God and teachers of the gospel.
Christians need to go and study the word of God themselves and not just accept wrong teaching passed down from generation to generation. As Christians, we are required to give gifts generously to the body of Christ and to those in need, we are not compelled to give or give a certain percentage, for God loves a cheerful giver, 1 Corinthians 9:7. Christ has fulfilled the law, Matthew 5:17; and He has redeemed us from the curse of the law, Galatians 3:13. We are to give and do good to the poor and needy and to love our neighbour, these take priority over tithing, for those who believe in it; “for the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:14.

To tithe or not to tithe, that is the question. So, let’s consider a simple proposition in Malachi 3, the challenge to prove, or test God in the tithe. To the best of my knowledge this is the only time that God, not only allows, but specifically challenges us to test Him. So, if we are really so concerned with what is “right” about tithing, how about using His litmus test to prove if tithing as a discipline and practice is “good” or “right” for ourselves? Thus we can cease “halting between two opinions” as the prophet challenged on Mt. Carmel. It’s a simple proposition. The challenge is to make tithing the first obligation off the top, the “first fruits.” The priority in the budget of first rather than anywhere else, is probably much more important than the amount. Like paying the Landlord confirms their right of ownership over our house or apartment, “paying” tithe is acknowledging the Lordship of Jesus Christ over our life and finance. It is a witness in the spiritual realms that we acknowledge His right to rule every aspect of our life. While tithing was instituted over the increase of crops, I propose that tithing of earnings is even MORE significant, as we exchange hours of our life for money earned. Tithing of our earnings is quite literally laying our lives on the alter, giving 1/10 of about 1/3 of our lives (if we work 40 hours out of 168 each week for example).
Now, to be absolutely transparent, I have been both a tither and a non-tither. I find merit in both views, and, at times, my experience has both proven AND disproven the merits of tithing, based on the results. The greatest change I’ve noticed is not in my circumstances, so much as it is in me. I’m a better person when I willingly give of myself, as a regular practice. I find myself being more aware of others, and less stressed about my circumstances. At this point, my preference is to tithe, as a matter of first priority, and I do so because it is good for me. However, there are times when I’ve been just as inclined to take care of urgent needs of my family with money that would otherwise have been the tithe, and I’ve not noticed any significant change in my financial, spiritual or relational condition when I’ve not tithed. In fact, for those who preach that “You can’t out-give God,” let me share my experience. In 2010 our family gave more than we ever had. In 2011 our total gross income for the year was LESS than our giving was in 2010, and it has not come up much since. There is more to this than simple formulas and “tit for tat.” This involves relationship as we are stewards of that which belongs to another, and we have an obligation to only use it where He wants it used. This has to do with heart issues and being transformed into the likeness of Christ, who is abundantly, joyfully, extravagantly generous. For God so loved the world that He GAVE. If we are free from the law of tithing, are we using our freedom “as an occasion to the flesh”, or by love to serve one another, as Galatians 5 says. Are we using EVERY excess dollar, to be abundant, generous givers, like our Heavenly Father, or are we using it to satisfy our personal desires? It seems the root of most questions regarding tithing is a matter of greed. Tithing, and all giving, are disciplines totally contrary to human nature. If we will be like Him, we need to practice generosity, and often that is done through discipline rather than “feeling led by the spirit.” When we learn to walk in love, we will find that love is the “fulfilling of the law” and questions about the law become irrelevant. When we love as our Father in Heaven loves, then we will give as He gives and there will be no more question whether we should tithe or not.

I want to respond to a few points you raised in your post. I will start with your very first sentence in which you say that it is only in Malachi 3 that God challenges us to test Him.” By “us” I guess you mean Christians and if I guess correctly, then I would l like to invite you to read Malachi from the beginning. Chapter 1 verse 1 makes it clear who it is meant for. It is “The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi.” It is a message from God specifically to Israelites to the exclusion all other nations. Verses 1-5 emphasise that not even the descendants of Esau (Edom), Jacob’s own brother hence the closest blood relations to Israelites are party to this message! The reason for this is that God wants to show Israelites how they dishonored him by not keeping the promises their forefathers had made vow to obey at the Mt. Horeb Covenant. In the message, God is recounting all the items of the Covenant they had breached hence why He has to bring it to an end and replace it with another. Among their many breaches is the famous verse 8 which asks, “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me” of tithes and offerings. God says He will bring his Son who will, “will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness” (Malachi 3:2-4). God had seen that the teachings of the Levites were crude and needed refining. For example, they were teaching tithing as obedience to law rather than as an act of mercy. When Jesus the great Refiner came, he chided the Pharisees for the same teaching and instead taught that God preferred mercy, justice and faithfulness rather than tithing dutifully to fulfill the law (Matthew 23:23). In the parable of the Good Samaritan, he was emphasizing the same principle that a Christian should give out of compassion rather than out of compulsion. The same is reinforced by Apostle Paul on the same subject in 2 Corinthians 9:7 says: “Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out compulsion but out of compassion: For God loves a cheerful giver.” You as a Christian should not follow the unrefined law of Moses to Israelites but the refined, commands of Jesus Christ.
As for giving to your family, that is not against the teachings of the New Testament and in fact is encouraged. One’s family takes priority over all other matters. Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 5:8 says: “If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever”. In Mark 7:1-13, Jesus speaking to Pharisees about looking after their parents told them that they had corrupted God’s Law by saying that “Corban” (what was intended as gift to God) could not be given to their starving parents. This contracted God’s law to “honor your father and mother” (Exodus 20:12). They had corrupted God’s law so that by branding money, “Corban” the would escape the responsibility of looking after parents. It is unchristian and a sin to deny help to one’s parents. 1 John 4:20-21 says: “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.”
Lastly, it is important to make the distinction that while the Jewish Bible (Old Testament) emphasises obedient of Law, the Christian Bible (New Testament) teaches love. Christianity is founded on is driven and practised by showing love to others! Confusion comes when Christians accept the Jewish Bible as equivalent to their own Bible: “For to this day the same veil remains at the reading of the old covenant. It has not been lifted, because only in Christ can it be removed” (2 Corinthians 13:14).
Jesus Christ is a tribe of Judah and is not a tribe of levite who were given the charge to collect tithe according to Leviticus law. Jesus Christ is the pivot of Christianity. There was no Christianity as a religion until he came and even it was after his death that his disciples were referred to as Christian in Antioch. The mission of Jesus Christ is to save his people from sin. As a result he was going about preaching the gospel of good news, healing the sick and setting the captives free. He promised holy spirit to his generation as a comforter and teacher which was demonstrated in the life of Apostles with raw power, they did the work that Jesus Christ did through the power of Holy Ghost. Jesus Christ mention that the law of grace which is law of love to help humanity in fulfilling the basic commandments of God. He did emphasize on love your neighbour as yourself as the summary of all the laws. Throughout his ministry, he did not collect tithe nor offering. The Apostles that preach Christianity never pay nor collect tithe. Apostle Paul who was put in charge of Gospel to gentiles who are not Jews talked more about Christianity. He did emphasize on grace, love and faith in Jesus Chris. He taught us that Christ has redeemed us from the curse of law. He emphasized on the issue of tithe in Hebrew 7 with convincing points that the priesthood order has changed from Levite to Judah the tribe of Judah and Jesus Christ is our everlasting priest. Since Judah were not allowed in the Leviticus law to collect tithe then the issue of tithe is gone with old covenant, we are now in a new covenant of grace by the blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus did emphasize in giving to the poor as a way of perfection of obedience to God’s commandments in Mathew 19. Gospel of Jesus is meant for the poor but in nowadays Christianity it is targeted toward the ‘ Rich’. Prosperity preaching is more dominant than salvation message which is the ultimate goal of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Universities built by our prosperity teachers are targeted toward the Rich and unbelievers and not the Poor who are believers and have been indoctrinated to pay their tithe. I have watched many preachers for good numbers of year and I discovered there target is not winning souls but how to siphon money from their members. They teach them the only way to prosperity is giving. Many of preachers today are stupidly rich at the expenses of their church members in such away that they contradict their message of heaven. If heaven is our target why are we amazing wealth to ourselves?.The earlier missionaries who came to Africa built Schools and hospitals for the poor. If we agree to pay 10% then I believe the following should be observed
1. It should be optional not a compulsion. Anything that you do by compulsion and not by love is not acceptable by God. The Lord love a cheerful giver
2. Church should give back to the society by building schools and hospitals to the poor
3. Those who pay tithe should be considered in case of help to settle their debts and pay for the need of their family on request basis
4. Church Leaders should live modest life because the followers are watching them. The love of money is the root of evil
5. There should be law guiding establishment of worship centers, the use and act of it. My candid opinion shallom.

My name is Samuel. The issue of tithing is extremely controversial to some Christians. Tithe is a COMMAND, A MUST, COMPULSORY in the OLD testament – one of the 613 ordinances. Deuteronomy 14:22 Malachi 3:6-10 etc. The old testament talks very well about tithing. Now let’s look at it from the new testament view with questions; (1) are Christians suppose to obey those ordinances for salvation? Absolutely NO. In the new testament Christ has fulfilled all those ordinances for us. So Christ gave us new ordinances – LOVE john 13:34 – loving God and loving your neighbours. We are NOT asked in the new testament to tithe as in the old testament. Now these my reasons why I should tithe BUT NOT a command. (1) God himself is a giver so I must give.(2) the more I give the more I get. The universe operates with principles – you reap what you sow. (3)to appreciate the blessing of God upon my life. we give out of blessings.(4) it also helps to carry out other activities in the church as other offerings – caring for the needy ones, widows, etc. I therefore recommend tithing to all Christians for sake of my little contributions
My own opinion…..Is tithing a sin?If I pay it will I go to hell? Or will God be angry with me? Or will He be glad for supporting His kingdom to help the poor,the prison ministry, home people home etc. Brethrens! tithe is not the most important thing in the Bible Matthew 23:23a but Jesus didn’t stop us from buying it. I am part of prison ministry I know how much my Assembly spend every Tuesday that we go to the prison, we get Lawyers for some, pay for there online schools tell them about Jesus love etc, so orders handle different orphanage house even my Church just paid for one woman hospital bills close to #500k that couldn’t leave the hospital after 4 months I didn’t know that hospital can even imprisoned someone until that day. See not all the Pastor are miss using this fund if we shout it down it will affect many things church is doing.I agreed that some Pastor misuse it but what about many that are using it well.The discussion should be what are the church using the Tithe for not to discouraged people to fund there kingdom. Praise be to God! Your church is doing good to help those in need. It is Christ’s command to help the needy not as a fulfillment of the law but out practiced by Pharisees to the extent of counting exactly a tenth of everything including vegetables and pay it to church, was not an act of “mercy” but to fulfill the law. Deuteronomy 14:22 instructs the Israelites to be sure to set aside a tenth of all their grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of their herds and flocks as tithe. Malachi 3:10 says: “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house (Temple). God says bring food (not money) but if the Temple where you intend to go tithe is so far that it will be inconvenient to carry tithe in form of food, sell it but repurchase food to replace yours when on arriving at the place of tithing. Deuteronomy 14: 26 says use the proceeds you got from selling your food and “to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine and or any other foods and drinks. Why does God ask for food in his house? Is it food for Him to eat? No! Deuteronomy 14:29 answers this question by saying: “So that the Levites (church workers who are not paid a salary), the homeless, the orphans and widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied. Many churches on receiving the tithes also conveniently forgets or disregards that tithes were meant for food for the needy and use it for commercial projects to enrich themselves and priests. When they do that the homeless, the orphans and widows who live in your towns do not get to “eat and satisfied” so that even though you have tithed, the windows of heaven to not open to pour out blessings. That God blesses those who feed the hungry is put clearly in Isaiah 58:10-11 which says: “Feed the hungry! Help those in trouble! Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you shall be as bright as day. And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy you with all good things, and keep you healthy too; and you will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.”
When Jesus came and found Pharisees emphasizing on the law of tithing rather than being merciful to the poor and hungry’ he chided them saying: Go learn what these words mean: “I prefer Mercy not Sacrifice” (Matthew 9:13). Yes! Jesus is not going to reward tithers but those who feed the hungry: “I was hungry and you fed me etc… (Matthew 25:23). He told of the mercy of the Good Samaritan to the injured man and taught: “Go do likewise!” (Luke 10:37). He said do unto others as you would have them do to you (if you had been the one in their place)(Luke 6:31). He taught that the second greatest law after love of God is to love your neighbour as you love yourself (Mark 12:31). Do that over this Christmas.
I wish all who truely believe in Jesus will go back and study the word of God with the Holy Spirit being the interpreter rather than “the opinion of men”
Jesus in Matthew 23:23 was specific to His audience of ” the Pharisees ” who refused to accept the fact that He has come as the promise of God to the people of Isreal. He did not discourage them from the practice of their believe at that point in time. But rather He tried to let them understand what was more important to God. As at the time of this discussion with the Pharisees, the temple was there with the Levities and Priests on duty; so it was still in order that the Pharisees continue in their practice. When Jesus was crucified, the curtains of the Temple that seperated the Priests and the congregants was ripped open so that all can have access to God. My question now is:
1. Do we still have the livites today?
2. If yes, where are they today among the gentile nations.
3. Who are the Priests according to the order of Aronic priesthood today?
4. Do we still need the Priest to attone for our sins?
5. Where is the temple where we are required to bring in all the tithe?
6. Why has the law on tithing changed from 10% of your increase to 10% of your Gross pay?
7. The Livites and Priests were not required to own any property and assets but today what do we have?
8. Churches have become private empires operated by a man, his wife and children against the teachings of the new testament where they had all things in common where no body lacked. Where does the Bible recommend that Church becomes a private enterprise?
9. Jesus emphasized giving to God, yourself and your neighbour out of pure love. Where does the Bible say that your blessing is only tied to tithing? Jesus said you will get back in good measure what you have given and how you have given.
10. Please I need a scripture that tells us that Jesus insisted on collecting tithes from His follower who were not poor men but were gainfully employed?
11. The early Apostles only asked the congregation to bring what anybody had to give to God so that the can pool resources for the common good of all in the Acts of the Apostles. Where did we learn a this doctrines that are purely based on greed and selfishness?
11. Why did Abraham only pay a tenth of the spoils and not of his regular income.
Please I strongly believe that ” all who preach the gospel must be supported but not to fund their greed and selfishness”
The Church was established to operate an equitable social system.

Any preachers of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, that misuse God money whether tithe or offering or sacrificial seed, must face judgement here on Earth because how to use what people brought to the alter of God is the Bible, the ones that belongs to God servant,and to take care of the poor and to take care of the temple everything is written in the Bible the word of God,so God have put everything in order for his kingdom to stand here on Earth,so God have also ordered all those who believe in him to bring their tithe , offering, sacrificial seed to his house not outside his house , old testament or New testament, the word of God is the words of God, what is written is written,obey or disobey, but one thing disobedient ones must know is that Satan is fighting the church financial,so don’t join Satan to fight pastors because of tithe,one God or obey Satan, our Lord Jesus Christ said I did not come to destroy what is the law but to fulfill the law,to fulfill means to make sure they obey it.
From Genesis to Revelation there’s not a single verse where a non-Jew was instructed to tithe.
People love to use Abraham as their example for why we should tithe. But in the entire Bible he only did it one time And it wasn’t even his stuff He gave a 10 of stuff he took from somebody in war
The idea that Christians are called to tithhe under the new covenant is absolutely insane

Unsure if any one has said this or not, but we tithe because we like to reverence God for who he is. But also God promised us that through our obedience of tithing that he would rebuke the devourer OFF our lives. That means not just our money but the devourer of our time/health/family. God wants to bless us but we tie his hands when we don’t put him first.
